Can I order my own custom designed AR500 steel targets?
Yes, creating custom shooting targets is our specialty! Contact us directly at support@gongshot.com or Ph: 616-402-5324. We can work from CAD drawings, a hand drawn sketch or even a picture. We can help to create your ideas!

AR500 steel targets vs. paper targets?
Paper targets are great when shooting groups for accuracy, such as when ammo load testing, and also for keeping a data record of the group results.
AR500 steel targets are great for doing quick reactive shooting drills, long distance shooting or just for general plinking. The best part of shooting steel targets is the instant audible and visual feedback when getting rounds on the target!

Is there a “best” way to mount AR500 steel targets?
Typically hanging/suspending targets or having the target loosely mounted on the target stand will allow the most audible ring and visual movement when hit. A target that is mounted with no ability to move will just make a dull thud noise and have minimal visual feedback.

What is a safe distance to shoot AR500 steel targets with a handgun?
When shooting handguns at AR500 steel targets, 15 to 20 yards for handguns is a good starting distance. Reducing the chances of a ricochet is key!  Factors to consider, making sure the target is angled away from the shooter towards the ground and that the face of the target is smooth and flat and not dimpled or cratered.

What is a safe distance to shoot AR500 steel targets with a rifle?
A general guide is to keep the targets at a distance where the bullet velocity is below 3000 FPS. Fast moving bullets will destroy your targets!
Reducing the chances of ricochet is key!  Factors to consider, making sure the target is angled away from the shooter towards the ground and that the face of the target is smooth and flat and not dimpled or cratered.

What kind of ammunition should I shoot at my AR500 steel targets?
Frangible ammo or copper jacketed ammo is good to use, never shoot AP ammo or steel core ammunition!

What kind of steel should I purchase for my targets?
For a combination of rifle, shotgun or handgun, choose AR500 for steel targets. AR500 is very durable when used for target shooting. AR500 has a Brinell hardness range of 477-555 BHN. In comparison, normal mild steel plate is A36. This is a non heat treated, low carbon steel, the hardness of A36 steel is about 150-180 Brinell.

Do you sell locally? Can I stop by to pickup targets in Grand Rapids, MI.?
We sure do!  If you would like to do a local pickup and save on shipping costs, contact us directly at support@gongshot.com or Ph: 616-402-5324. Typical turnaround time is usually day, large orders may take longer.

What's the difference between GongShot.com and the other companies selling targets online?
The biggest difference is how the steel targets are cut.  We cut all our steel targets in house with our own waterjet cutting machine. Cutting methods like plasma or torch and laser cutting create a H.A.Z.  With waterjet the absence of a heat affected zone, means the AR500 steel material properties are unaffected and the targets are not subject to weakened areas around the cut edges or holes.
Where are your AR500 steel targets and targets stands made?

All of our targets stands and AR 500 steel targets are made in Grand Rapids, MI.  U.S.A.

Always wear your eye protection and follow these gun safety rules!

1. All guns are always loaded!
2. Never let the muzzle sweep anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
4. Always be sure of your target and what is behind it.

  1. Great Product! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 7th Feb 2014

The stand looks very solid; it is a 3 piece design (top cap, H-base, and the 2x4 and furring strip slot bar).

Great design, they all mate together beautifully. I will be upgrading the screws (included) that come with it to hardened steel for a little more durability under the stress of shooting it will 8mm. 7.62x54, 308 etc.

The only other mod I would consider doing is drilling and welding a nut to the back of the 2x4 base and 2x4 cap for a tensioning screw, but with mounting it up as-is I don't see any issues. the furring strip slots have tensioning screws already installed.

overall I give it a 5/5, this is a quality product, comes pre-painted, and is a very versatile and well-thought out design, especially for those of us with limited trunk space for range trips!
